Etymology

Calque of Literary Chinese 遷怒 (qiānnù), from The Analects:[1]

顔回(がんかい)という(もの)()り。(がく)(この)めり、(いか)りを(うつ)さず(あやま)ちを(ふたた)びせざりき。
Gankai to iu mono ari. Gaku o konomeri, ikari o utsusazu, ayamachi o futatabi sezariki.
There was a person called Yan Hui. He loved to learn, did not transfer his anger, and he did not make the same mistake twice.

Equivalent to 怒り (ikari, anger) +‎ (o) +‎ 遷す (utsusu, to transfer).
