Calque of English social withdrawal.[1] Compound of 引き (hiki-, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of verb 引く (hiku), “to pull”) + 籠もり (komori, the 連用形 (ren’yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of verb 籠もる (komoru), “to seclude oneself”).
