Possibly from written Chinese 床板 (chuángbǎn, literally bed + board). However, given the difference in meaning and the late appearance of the Japanese term (first cited in 1928[1]), the Japanese term is perhaps more likely a coinage in Japanese from Middle Chinese-derived elements, as a compound of (shō, floor) +‎ (ban, board).

Usage notes
[edit]

As an on'yomi term, this appears to be used in more restricted technical contexts than yukaita.

Homophonous with, and occasionally conflated with, 床版 (shōban, deck (as of a bridge); floor slab (uncommon synonym of スラブ (surabu))). Some sources even list this as an alternative spelling of 床板 (shōban, floorboard),[5] but usage observed online suggests that these are more commonly treated as separate terms.
