しょう Grade: S |
ばん Grade: 3 |
kan'yōon |
Possibly from written Chinese 床板 (chuángbǎn, literally “bed + board”). However, given the difference in meaning and the late appearance of the Japanese term (first cited in 1928[1]), the Japanese term is perhaps more likely a coinage in Japanese from Middle Chinese-derived elements, as a compound of 床 (shō, “floor”) + 板 (ban, “board”).
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]床板 • (shōban) ←しやうばん (syauban)?
- [from 1928] floorboard, wooden flooring
Usage notes
[edit]As an on'yomi term, this appears to be used in more restricted technical contexts than yukaita.
Homophonous with, and occasionally conflated with, 床版 (shōban, “deck (as of a bridge); floor slab (uncommon synonym of スラブ (surabu))”). Some sources even list this as an alternative spelling of 床板 (shōban, “floorboard”),[5] but usage observed online suggests that these are more commonly treated as separate terms.
