Shift in meaning from (たしな) (tashinamu), from たしない (tashinai, difficult, agonizing; poor, lacking, an adjective) + (-mu), from たし (tashi, an element also found in (たし) (tashika, certain; reliable) and たしに (tashi ni)) + ない (-nai, very much that quality or state).[1]
