Etymology
[edit]伊呂波 (Iroha) + 仮名 (kana), so called because historically, hiragana were arranged in 伊呂波順 (“Iroha order”), as opposed to katakana which were historically arranged in 五十音順 (literally “order of the fifty sounds”).
