Compound of 下瀬 (Shimose, surname of the inventor, Japanese naval engineer Shimose Masachika (1860–1911)) +‎ 火薬 (kayaku, gunpowder, literally fire + drug, chemical).[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Invented in 1888.[3][5][6]
