A shift in pronunciation from earlier ポンス (ponsu), borrowed from Dutch pons (“punch”, obsolete, superseded by punch),[1][2][3] from English punch, ultimately from Sanskrit पञ्चन् (páñcan, “five”). Doublet of シンク (shinku), ファイブ (faibu), and ポンペイ (Ponpei).
