[edit]Pronunciation
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]Borrowed from German Pest.[4][1][5][2]

[edit]Etymology 2
[edit]Shortening of ペスト・ジェノヴェーゼ (pesuto jenovēze), from Italian pesto alla genovese.

Etymology 3
[edit]Borrowed from English Pest, from Hungarian Pest.
A borrowing directly from Hungarian is extremely unlikely, as the Hungarian pronunciation of /pɛʃt/ would result in a Japanese rendering of ペシュト (peshuto) instead.

[edit]Etymology 4
[edit]Borrowed from French peste, from the title of the 1947 novel La Peste by Albert Camus.[1][5]
