Usage notes
[edit]- On the ateji spelling:
- There are some who write 沙港 (Shakō) as 沙都 (Shatō), using the one closer in pronunciation, but from current trends, it will probably settle on 沙港 (Shakō).
Mr. Uchiyama has also sent a letter to Hyōroku expressing his grievances; and among them is 沙都 as the ateji for Seattle, described as follows:—
"The characters of 沙市 are confusable with Shasi in China, so will you adopt my invention of 沙都? No sir, Seattle is not a desert! No sir! It is the city of shining beaches and green pines. Good-bye, fine people of 沙都—Regards to the pressmen."
Hyōroku is also vexed by ateji for Seattle. シヤトル is strange, and I often write 沙港. I wrote 沙路 once, and promptly received even scoldings, as, "I will not read a newspaper that mimicks the Chinese!" Seattle written by a Chinaman is of course 舍路, but at any rate let us not use this.
Perhaps I shall use the Uchiyama-style 沙都 from now on.
