Compound of 湯 (yu, “warm or hot water”) + 種 (tane, “a seed; raw material; base”), with voicing of the second morpheme due to rendaku (連濁).
Coined in 2001 by 神戸屋 (Kōbeya) as a brand name of a type of 食パン (shokupan), employing its patented manufacturing process.[1]
