From Proto-Ryukyuan *moko, from Proto-Japonic *moko. The Omoro Sōshi quotation cited preserves the archaic form.

Attested in the 中山伝信録 (Records of Zhongshan, 1719) as "女婿 母姑" (son-in-law: mǔgū).
