[edit]Part of a cluster of related adverbs deriving from mimetic root むく (muku).
First attested in a text from the early 1600s.[1]

Usage notes
[edit]Regarding the abruptly sense, むっくり (mukkuri) indicates a somewhat slower action than synonym むっくと (mukkuto).
