[edit]Shift from earlier otherwise-unattested adjective *糞しい (babashii, literally “poopy”), from 糞 (baba, “poopoo”, childish term; compare English poopoo) + しい (-shii, adjective-forming suffix).[1][2] Appears in texts from the early 1800s.[3]
