【方相ほうそう】 [noun] (Buddhism) directional barriers placed to set a place for Buddhist training apart from the outside world [noun] (obsolete) Short for 方相氏 (hōsōshi, “the figure who drives away demonss at 追儺 (tsuina, “year end festival to exorcise evil”), also led the hearse carrying the coffin of a deceased emperor”).
