From Proto-Ryukyuan *yone (cereal grain), from Proto-Japonic *yənəi. Cognate with Yaeyama ゆーに (yūni, sandbank), Miyako ゆに (yuni, cereal grains (e.g. rice plant; millet)), Old Okinawan よね (yone, rice; sand, whence Okinawan ゆに (yuni, id.))), Kikai ゆぬぃ゚ (yunï, ash), Old Japanese (yo₂ne, rice). Doublet of どぅなん (Dunan, Yonaguni).
