Etymology

Probably equivalent to standard Japanese 力(ちから) (chikara, “strength”) + いっぱい (ippai, “full”), "full strength" or "full of strength."

   「ちかっぱい腹(はら)が減(へ)ったけん、ラーメン食(た)べろや！」
   「ああ、よかね、その角(かど)のラーメン屋(や)で食(た)べろか？」
   「まじで？そこのラーメン屋(や)うまいと？」
   「ちかっぱいうまいばい！」

   “Chikappai hara ga hetta ken, rāmen tabero ya!”
   “Ā, yokane, sono kado no rāmen-ya de tabero ka?”
   “Maji de? Soko no rāmen-ya umai to?”
   “Chikappai umai bai!”

   ―"I'm absolutely starving, lets go get some ramen."
   ―"That sounds good, how about that ramen shop around the corner?"
   ―"Really? Is it good there?"
   ―"Super-delicious!"

Usage notes

• Part of the Hakata dialect of Japanese. Used particularly often in the Chikuzen (West Fukuoka Prefecture) and Hikugo areas (South Fukuoka Prefecture), except for Kitakyushu.
• There is nothing above or beyond something described as chikappai.
  • ちかっぱいかわいい (chikappai kawaii) or ちかっぱいかっこいい (chikappai kakkoii) is the ultimate compliment to members of the opposite sex.
  • ちかっぱいおいしい (chikappai oishii) should be reserved for describing only the most delicious of foods.
