Etymology

Corruption of ϫⲉⲙⲫⲉϩ (čempheh, apple) where ϫⲉⲙ- was discarded possibly akin to μηλοπέπων (mēlopépōn), a combination of μῆλον (mêlon, apple) and πέπων (pépōn, ripe), which gave rise to Byzantine Greek πεπόνιον (pepónion) and Greek πεπόνι (pepóni, melon).
