[edit]From Demotic mdy (“Mede, Persian”), borrowed from the Aramaic gentilic מָדָי (māḏāy, “Median, Mede”). Ultimately from Old Iranian; Compare Old Persian 𐎶𐎠𐎭 (Māda).
