Symbol

[edit]

  1. (typography) A carrier for combining diacritic marks, used to display the diacritic without a base letter.

Usage notes

[edit]

A diacritic mark will be combined with this symbol to display how it appears relative to a base letter. For example, the circumflex accent may be displayed as ⟨◌̂⟩, the Devanagari vowel sign ū as ⟨◌ू⟩. With some fonts, this symbol will appear automatically if a diacritic is used without a base letter.
