1. (mathematics) A symbol used to denote a relation between mathematical objects. There is no universally agreed upon meaning, so often the symbol is defined specifically by the author of the text. Due to its visual similarity to the subset symbol (⊂), it is most often used to denote a partial order. In LaTeX, it is typeset with \sqsubset.
