ὀλολύζω
Appearance
Ancient Greek
[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]- ὀλολῡ́ττω (ololū́ttō)
Etymology
[edit]Onomatopoeic reduplicated formation, with the same ending of ἰύζω (iúzō, “to shout, yell”). Similar formations, genetically cognate or of identical structure, are Latin ululō (“I howl”), Sanskrit उलूलि (ulūli, “a howling, crying aloud”), Lithuanian uluti (“howl”), all with u. Beside these stands this verb, with dissimilation ο-υ or perhaps ablauting to ἐλελεῦ (eleleû, “woe, alas”).
