ἰσθμός

Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]A derivation from εἶμῐ (eîmĭ, “to go or come”) with a suffix -θμο- has been assumed, comparing also Old Norse eið (“isthmus”). However, the -σ- is unexplained, so the word could well be of Pre-Greek origin.
