Etymology

[edit]

Possibly from Proto-Hellenic *ewajō, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁wéh₂-ye-ti, from the root *h₁weh₂- (to leave, abandon). However, the augment of the Classical Greek preterite points to Proto-Hellenic *hewajō.
