[edit]May be from Proto-Indo-European *leyg- (“jump, whirl”), with cognates including Sanskrit रेजति (rejati), Lithuanian láigyti, Gothic 𐌻𐌰𐌹𐌺𐌰𐌽 (laikan), Old English lāc, and Albanian ling. Could also be from a *ἐϝελ- (*ewel-) / *ϝεϝελ- (*wewel-). Beekes suggests it might be both.
