[edit]From ἄψ (áps, “back, back again”) plus an uncertain verbal root, possibly Proto-Indo-European *h₃er- (“to move”) (compare ὄρνῡμι (órnūmi)) or *h₁ers- (“to flow”) (compare Latin errō (“to wander, get lost”) and Gothic 𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌶𐌾𐌰𐌽 (airzjan, “to mislead”)).
