[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *n̥-dʰgʷʰi-tós, from *dʰgʷʰey- (“to decline, perish”) with alpha privative (PIE *n̥-). Cognate to Sanskrit अक्षित (akṣita). By surface analysis, ἀ- (a-) + φθίω (phthíō) + -τός (-tós).
