ἀσύφηλος
Appearance
Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]For the vocalism, Σίσυφος (Sísuphos) and σέσυφος (sésuphos, “knavish, roguish”) are compared. Furnée further compares the gloss αἰσύφιος (aisúphios, “deceptive, treacherous”), which seems to fit well. In view of the interchange αι-/α-, a Pre-Greek origin is probable.
