Unknown. Frisk takes it as *ϝαρύω (*warúō) and connects it with Old Armenian գերեմ (gerem, “to capture, take prisoner”), εὑρίσκω (heurískō, “to find”), assuming a root *uer-; but the Greek -α- creates difficulties for this etymology.
