[edit]Apparently from ἀνα- (ana-) + ἐρείπω (ereípō, “to throw down, tear down”), though some dictionaries associate it with ἁρπάζω (harpázō, “to snatch away, carry off”) or ἐρέπτομαι (eréptomai, “to feed on”).
