Etymology

[edit]

Unknown. Apparently synonymous with Ancient Greek ὅροι (hóroi), according to Hesychius of Alexandria.

Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éḱrō: compare Ancient Greek ἄκμων (ákmōn, meteoric stone; anvil) from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éḱmō

Noun

[edit]

ἀκρουνοί (akrounoí) (plural)

  1. (hapax) borders, boundary stones

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Only attested as a hapax in Hesychius:
    • 5th century CE, Hesychius Alexandreus, Συναγωγὴ Πασῶν Λέξεων κατὰ Στοιχεῖον Α:
      ἀκρουνοί· ὅροι, ὑπὸ Μακεδόνων
      akrounoí; hóroi, hupò Makedónōn
akrounoí: boundary stones, among the Macedonians
