[edit]Uncertain. Perhaps cognate with Sanskrit वेविज (vevija, “quick”), यात् (yāt, “moving”), वेविज्यते (vevijyate, “to flee from”), though Beekes calls this "formally impossible" because of the long -ī-. Possibly instead related to αἰόλος (aiólos, “swift, nimble, quick”).
