Proposed to derive from Proto-Yoruboid *ɔ́-ɓɔ́. Cognate with Yoruba ọwọ́, Èkìtì Yoruba ọọ́, Ifè ɔwɔ́, Igala ọ́wọ́, Ayere ɔ́wɔ́, Àhàn ɔɔ, Edo obọ, and Ehueun o-wɔ́. See obọ for a more detailed etymological analysis.
