Proposed to be derived from Proto-Yoruboid *ɛ́ʃɛ̀, Proto-Yoruboid *ɔ-sɛ̃̀, or Proto-Yoruboid *ɛ́sɛ̀, all ultimately deriving from the verb *sɛ̀, or a slight variation (see *ʃɛ̀ or *sɛ̃̀). Cognate with Yoruba ẹsẹ̀, Igala ẹ́rẹ̀, Ayere ehè, and Àhàn esè, check the Yoruba entry for more cognate terms.
