Etymology

From Proto-Semitic *ṣbṭ- (to seize, take hold of, catch). Compare Arabic ضَبَطَ (ḍabaṭa, to take, hold) and Biblical Hebrew צָבַט (ṣɔḇáṭ, to reach, hold).
