Santali

Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Austroasiatic *tŋiːʔ. Cognate with Bondo siŋi ("sun").

The Proto-Munda form of this etymon shares an isogloss with "Northern" Austroasiatic branches (Khasi sngi, Khmu [Cuang] sŋiʔ), while the rest of Austroasiatic have the non-"Northern" *t- (Khmer ថ្ងៃ (thngay), Mon တ္ၚဲ).

Pronunciation
