From Proto-Southwestern Tai *mɛːwᴬ² (cat), from onomatopoeic origin. Cognate with Thai แมว (mɛɛo), Lao ແມວ (mǣu), ᦶᦙᧁ (maew), Tai Dam ꪵꪣꪫ, Shan မႅဝ်း (méao), Tai Nüa ᥛᥦᥝᥴ (máew), Phake မိဝ် (miw), Ahom 𑜈𑜢𑜈𑜫 (biw).
