From Proto-Tai *keːꟲ (to undo; to untie), from Middle Chinese (MC keaX, “to untie, undo”). Cognate with Thai แก้ (gɛ̂ɛ), Lao ແກ້ (), Shan ၵႄႈ (kāae), Ahom 𑜀𑜦𑜧 ().
