From Proto-Tai *kwaːtᴰ, from Old Chinese (OC *kroːd, “to wipe; to sweep”). Cognate with Thai กวาด (gwàat), Lao ກວາດ (kuāt), Shan ၵႂၢတ်ႇ (kwàat), Ahom 𑜀𑜄𑜫 (kat).
