From Proto-Tai *maːꟲ (horse), from Middle Chinese (MC maeX). Cognate with Thai ม้า (máa), Northern Thai ᨾ᩶ᩣ, Lao ມ້າ (), Tai Nüa ᥛᥣᥳ (mȧa), Shan မႃႉ (mâ̰a), Ahom 𑜉𑜠 (ma), 𑜉𑜡 () or 𑜉𑜡𑜠 (māa), Zhuang max.
