[edit]From Proto-Southwestern Tai *tawᴮ¹ (“turtle”), from Proto-Tai *tawᴮ (“turtle”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨲᩮᩢ᩵ᩣ (tao), Lao ເຕົ່າ (tao), Lü ᦎᧁᧈ (ṫaw¹), Shan တဝ်ႇ (tào), Thai เต่า (dtào), Ahom 𑜄𑜧 (taw). Compare Proto-Be *ɗuːᴮꟲ¹.
