Etymology 1
[edit]From Proto-Mon-Khmer *lujʔ ~ *luuj() ~ *luəj() ~ *ləəj() (“to wade; to swim”). Cognate with Mon လုဲ, Vietnamese lội, Riang luj². Doublet of លយ (lɔɔy, “to float”). Compare Thai ลุย (lui, “to wade”), Thai ลอย (lɔɔi, “to float”).
