Inherited from Angkorian Old Khmer វ្នាក៑ (vnāk), វ្នក៑ (vnak), ព្នាក៑ (bnāk), ភ្នាក៑ (bhnāk), from Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer វ្នាក៑ (vnāk) (first attested in c. 578-677). Cognate with Thai พนัก (pá-nák), Lao ພະນັກ (pha nak).

Equivalent to From ពាក់ (pĕək, to carry on the neck, shoulders) with infixed -n- (instrumental).
