តាវៅ

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Khmer

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer duvau, further etymology unknown (Jenner, 2009). Similar-looking forms found in various neighbouring languages, mostly Austronesian, might purely be coincidental. Compare Vietnamese tu hú, Sundanese tuweuw, etc.

The second sense is due to the fact that this bird often lays its eggs in others birds' nests. (Tandart, 1935)
