ᚺᛟᛚᛏᚨ (holta, wood) +‎ -ᛃᚨᛉ (-jaʀ, coming from), cognate with German Holz (grove; woods; small forest) from Proto-Germanic *hultą. holt- has also been interpreted as a place-name, thus meaning "coming from Holt", and as a masculine personal name; "the descendant of Holtaz".
