Proto-Norse
[edit]Etymology
[edit]ᚨᛚᛃᚨ- (alja-, “foreign”) + *ᛗᚨᚱᚲᚢ (*marku, “forest, woodland; borderland, marches”) + -ᛁᛉ (-iʀ, “-ed”, forms adjectives from nouns).
Adjective
[edit]ᚨᛚᛃᚨᛗᚨᚱᚲᛁᛉ (aljamarkiʀ)
- of a foreign (border)land (possibly nominalised as a proper noun)
Usage notes
[edit]- This word may also be read as the genitive singular of *ᛗᚨᚱᚲᚢ (*marku), for which compare Old Norse mǫrk with attested genitive singular merkr. The reading as a (possibly nominalised) adjective is based on typology and comparison with ᚷᛚᛇᚨᚢᚷᛁᛉ (glïaugiʀ, “gleaming-eyed”) and ᚢᚾᚷᚨᚾᛞᛁᛉ (ungandiʀ, “un-enchanted, not afflicted by sorcery”) where -ᛁᛉ (-iʀ) is clearly a suffix, not a case ending.
