[edit]From Proto-Semitic *ḥaṣ́an-. Compare Tigrinya ሓጸነ (ḥaṣänä, “protect, adopt”), Amharic ኣጠነ (ʾaṭṭänä, “raise a child”), Arabic حَضَنَ (ḥaḍana, “to hug, nurse, rear”), Akkadian [script needed] (ḫaṣānu, “embrace”).
