Middle Korean

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From a reconstructed Old Korean form *sùpyé. It was pointed that several names for body parts in Old Korean were affixed with ㅅ-: ᄭᅩ리〮 (*sokwo(l/r)i), ᄲᅡᆷ (*su/so-pam), ᄲᅳᆯ〮 (*sèpúl). A theory propose origin of Middle Korean from earlier *ń. Loss of *-ń- gives *-y- and thus *sùpyé can be further compared to Proto Japanese *pənay.
