Etymology

By synchronic surface analysis, a doublet of 가ᄌᆞᆯ〮비다〮 (kàcólpìtá) reflecting an irregular vowel alternation /a ~ ʌ/; compare 난호다 (nanhwota), ᄂᆞᆫ호다 (nonhwota)

Diachronically, however, the two forms may also derive from different verb stems. See the main entry for more information.
