From წკუნ- (ǯǩun-, to ache) +‎ -ა (-a), from earlier *წყუნ- (*ǯqun-). Cognate with Mingrelian წყუნ-ა (c̣q̇un-a), წყუნ-აფ-ა (c̣q̇un-ap-a).
