[edit]Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish قرمزی (kırmızı), via Persian قِرْمِز, and Arabic قِرْمِز (qirmiz). This doubly-reborrowed word derives from Persian *کرمست (*kermest) via Proto-Indo-Iranian *kŕ̥miš and ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *kʷŕ̥mis (“worm”).
